Life in a blog-free universe

Lifeinablogfreeuniverse“Can I take your picture for my blog?” I asked, feeling bold and au courant. The unemployment officer was a soft-spoken woman who squinted and repeatedly touched her oversized glasses. Her computer looked something like the one pictured at left.  And she’d never heard of a blog.   “What’s that?” she asked.  It took a lot of words to explain. More than it took to recount this interchange, in fact.  “Opinions,” “internet,” and “journal” figured in there. I made sure she’d heard of the Internet. (She had.)   Finally, she nodded and smiled. “Ooooh,” she said. “I’m sure you’re going to be very successful at that.” And then, turning back to her computer, she added, “You can’t take my picture.”
